Business Analysis and
Information Management

This course provides an overview of the business analysis function within information management initiatives. Using the information management lifecycle as the organizational framework for the course students learn what business analysts do and why they are important. The course provides a focus the role of the business analyst in identifying information management challenges within an organization, as well as their role in implementing the solution. Participants also learn about the business analyst function in conducting information management studies.

In this two-day intensive course, participants gain a working vocabulary for communicating effectively on information management projects. Those new to business analysis and information management will leave this course with the framework necessary to build more in-depth skills. At the end of the course, students leave with a grounding in:

  • The role of the business analyst throughout the phases of different types information management projects
  • The basic elements of an information management study
  • The role of the business analyst in software implementations, such as an electronic document management system (EDMS)
  • The importance of key information management deliverables, such as taxonomies, policies and procedures, and education programs
  • Different requirements-gathering techniques and when to use them
  • How to work with business analysts who are external consultants

  • Project Managers and team members on an internal Information Management initiative for their organization
  • Business Managers and subject matter experts involved in Information Management initiatives who are working with external consultants

Instructor: Janet de Guzman

Janet is a senior information management consultant in CGI’s Information Management Practice. Janet works with her clients to develop Information Management frameworks, strategies, policies, and education programs. She has extensive experience in business analysis for Information Management initiatives such as electronic document management system (EDMS) implementations. She has led and participated in several end-to-end EDMS projects where she gathered business requirements, developed business rules, and conducted the post-project evaluation. She has a proven ability to work closely with client users, management and steering committees, develop a solid understanding of the current and desired future state of their business practices, and translate them into information management solutions.

Janet is also a dynamic trainer, facilitator, and instructional designer and has applied her extensive skills and experience to design and deliver training programs and the associated course materials
